The Supreme Court of the Republic of Mari El has liquidated the human rights organization "Man and Law" at the request of the Ministry of Justice. Last year, the Ministry conducted an unscheduled inspection at "Man and Law" and found "gross violations" that included events held by the organization in regions where it had no representative offices. The Ministry of Justice also revealed the absence of foreign agent markings and non-compliance of the organization's activities with its statutory goals.

Local journalist Alexei Seryogin says that the unscheduled inspection could have been initiated after a report from an employee of the Ministry of Justice.

The organization has been functioning since 1999 and was the only human rights center in Mari El. "Man and Law" handled cases of torture by the police and helped victims to reach the ECHR. In 2014, the organization was declared a foreign agent.

Dozens of human rights organizations have been liquidated in Russia since the beginning of the war. On August 18, the Moscow City Court dissolved the Sakharov Center. The Ministry of Justice claimed that the organization was not allowed to hold a mobile exhibition dedicated to Andrei Sakharov outside Moscow. Neither it was allowed to hold regional educational events, including a school of public defenders.

Last year two oldest human rights centers, Moscow Helsinki Group and Memorial, were also dissolved by the Ministry of Justice.
